Coturnix quail have a better feed conversion rate when laying eggs than chickens. Less feed produces more eggs. Coturnix quail, on a 16% protein to 22% protein diet, often start laying in their 6th week after hatching. Chickens take 4 to 6 months to start laying. Quail eggs mostly weigh 14 to 17 grams. 5 quail eggs are roughly the equivalent, for recipes, of 1 extra large chicken egg. Quail eggs taste the same as chicken eggs.
Many communities that don't allow chickens, allow quail. Quail need very little space compared to chickens. Quail are much quieter.
