I’ve decided to let go of my current Bug and move on to something else. Titled as a 1965, but rides on a 1967 chassis, I believe. See below for a detailed description of the car.
Engine – later 1600 doghouse engine of unknown origin. Starts up with no problem, and runs just fine. Recently adjusted valves. Leaks a little oil, but nothing too major.
Transmission – shifts in all gears, but occasionally pops out of reverse under heavier load. Never been enough to bother me, as it only happens once in a while.
Body – body is solid overall, with just a hint of rust bubbles popping through behind the doors at the bottom, and near the lower hinge near the heater channel. One dent on driver’s side. Front and rear aprons have been replaced, poorly. Looks OK from the outside, but I believe a 7-year-old welded the back clip on. Rear apron has been cut to allow easier engine removal.
Chassis – Solid pan! Recently replaced front suspension components, including brakes, drums, and lines. New drop spindles with original width beam. New shocks in rear, along with new brakes and bearings.
Paint – paint is shiny and looks good from a distance, but it’s an amateur paint job. Some runs, and what looks like solvent pop in the clear coat. Some bubbling on the top left portion of the decklid as well, and some crud at the top of the hood near the windshield (looks like adhesive or something).
Electrical – Electrical is all there, but not the prettiest. Brake lights, headlights, horn all work – turn signals worked until today, when it suddenly went dead. One of the wires had come loose, and may have shorted out and/or fried the unit. Haven’t had a chance to dig in just yet, but should be an easy fix. Wipers do not work.
Other – Speedometer is not hooked up, but I have the cable. Pop-out windows are included, but are not installed on the car. I also have a new sway bar for the front that needs to be installed. Interior is complete, but shows some wear. Carpet is a bit ugly, but functional. Sun vizors are not correct and droop down a bit. Steering wheel horn ring is broken – horn switch has been added next to ashtray on dash. Radio opening was cut a bit larger (not by me) to accept a modern head unit.
I’ve tried to be as thorough as possible about the car. Don’t get me wrong, despite all the flaws this is still a very cool car to drive around, and gets tons of thumbs up and waves. Would make a wonderful driver as-is, or dig in and fix it up even more. Hard to find one with so little rust in the Midwest (unless it’s been fully restored - $$$). Available for pick-up in Columbus, OH, not far from Port Columbus airport.
Call/text/email if you’d like to learn more – I have additional photos I can send as well. Would like to send her to a good home!
