"Nervous": Sir Henry James (Statesmen, no. 164)--Vanity Fair, March 7, 1874

The British Magazine Vanity Fair produced a series of caricatures from 1868 forward. This one is captioned "Nervous," is by Carlo Pellegrini aka "Ape," and dated March 7, 1874

Carlo Pellegrini (1839-1889), was a caricaturist for Vanity Fair from 1869 to his death in 1889, signing his works "Ape." Henry James, 1st Baron James of Hereford (1828-1911), was a lawyer and statesman, serving under Gladstone as Solicitor General and Attorney General. After he broke with Gladstone over Irish Home Rule and joined the Liberal Unionists, he served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Image has been framed for over 45 years. Some tanning has occurred to the image as a result but it has been otherwise protected.
