Original 1941 Old Town 18 ft. Guide wood/canvas canoe., A.S. grade. Longtime owner. Never swamped or wrecked. Always stored indoors. This popular 'Guide' model has a flat bottom with keel, a wide beam, low profile sheer line, and floor rack, making it an ideal stable touring canoe with high cargo capacity. Its shallow draft offers stability, while the heavy #6 duck canvass and thick filler adds protection. However, it has been primarily used in flat deep water for family recreation and fishing.
The open gunwales are spruce, ash was used for thwarts, deck, & keel, with cedar planks & ribs, caned seats, and brass hardware - including bow and stern guards. Wood finished with spar varnish and the canvas with marine paint. Though Old Town now offers a blue, it was the original green until several decades ago. Also included is: an outboard gas motor, backrest, three different size oars (one an OT spruce), a car carrier (needs new cups), and four USCG life vests (2 adult, 2 child).
The Old Town Canoe Company has been a premier maker of wood canoes for over 120 years. The lasting quality of Maine's old growth wood, as well as the beautiful craftsmanship is apparent. Whether used for recreation or fishing, don't be surprised when this classic work-of-art draws admirers at the dock. Camps and scout troops might find it uniquely useful. It also could be used for marketing and/or decor in restaurants and themed facilities.
