The Aluminum 20" TWIN DOWN TUBE QUAD that SE Racing never actually made, but their welder Sal did....lol
This is one of about four that were made. This one, a SE baby blue one and two others which were candy red and raw aluminum.
Chances are if you're looking at this and are a B.M.X. history buff than you may have seen or heard of these uber rare frame & fork sets, than again, maybe not!?
There's not too much information floating around regarding these but it seems to go like this...Jesse Vargas and Sal Correa started a custom frame & fork company named "Vargas Racing Products which operated around 2001-2012. Jesse eventually sold the company and it later became "Vegas Racing Products".
They primarily fabricated custom and wildly popular SE Racing Quadangle frames making minor changes and offering options that SE never did but Sal thought they should have.
Sal Correa was SE Racings head welder from about 1982-1999 until he started with Allient from 2000-2006. He used left over SE Racing tubing and even used the original frame jigs.
Last I heard Sal still welds for many companies including Race Inc, Redman and others.
While nobody seems to know exactly how many of each frame size were built the numbers are VERY small. In the 20" size, which is what I'm selling, there has only been 4 that have surfaced and this is one.
What makes this one even more rare is it's a first generation which utilized the original SE rear tubing and does not have the brace between the double down tubes. Some of Sal and Jesses later frames used boxed tubing for the chainstays for unknown reasons. Possibly legal reasons or they just ran out of the original style SE tubing..idk?
These Landing Gear forks are also unique...
SE forks were unstamped from 80-84 on the bologna cut. 86-99 had a horizontal SE. The unstamped forks from SE had thin dropouts with three holes and the stamped forks had double thick dropouts with two holes. Sal mixed the two. Unstamped fork legs with the thick two hole dropouts. As far as SE 20" Landing Gear from 80-99, SE never offered canti mount studs. Sal did here on these.
Long story short I purchased this frame and fork set many years ago, almost bought another as the seller had the SE baby blue one as well. I built it up with nothing but the best parts from two of my favorite, legendary/old school companies-Bullseye & Bassett Racing. Every part is from them with the exception of the rims, grips and freewheel & front sprocket. The freewheel is a Profile Elite, the rims are Araya 7Xs, grips are Oakley B1B, 44T MCS sprocket.
This bike was built for a calendar build here on the Museum years ago (wasn't completed in time unfortunately) and as a show piece. It was ridden around the block one or twice but has spent most of its life on my office wall and it has the dust to prove it..lol I've never put brake pad to rim so all is perfect.
If you're a collector of B.M.X, especially SE Racing this is one for the herd that you don't want to pass up as you may not see another for a long time, if ever. Thanks for looking and hope someone out there learned something as I know I surely have since owning this unique piece of B.M.X. history.
