Thistle Hollow is located in Grant County, West Virginia, about 35 miles south of Cumberland, Maryland, and 150 to 165 miles from Washington and Baltimore. The cabin sits high atop Walker’s Ridge, about 500 feet above New Creek Valley but 1,000 feet below the flanking mountains. Across the hollow, the view from the cabin extends nearly 30 miles down the valley.

Thistle Hollow is an old hill farm, whose steep slopes were once plowed by mule for crops. There are some remains of the old farm. The ruins of a smokehouse are still visible; tree rows mark the edges of some fields; terraces, which were cut in the hillside to accommodate split rail fences, can be seen; occasional split rails still survive; and some apple and pear trees still bear fruit.

The cabin’s logs are well over 100 years old. It was originally a school, located a dozen miles away. The logs were moved to the present site in the early 1970s, and the cabin was finished by local carpenters who restored the cabin of Nancy Hanks (Lincoln’s mother). We have kept the cabin rustic. It has no electricity or running water. We find that this is conducive to a slower, more relaxed, and more sociable pace of life.

The Thistle Hollow log cabin features:
Two bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with twin beds
Sleeping bags for additional occupants
A fully equipped kitchen, which includes a wood-burning cook stove, an ice box, a dry sink, dishes, flatware, cook ware, and utensils
Antique furniture
Kerosene lanterns
A porch for sitting and enjoying the view
An outdoor fire pit
A solid oak outhouse (from which we have managed to evict the resident groundhog)

Pets are most welcome; it is a marvelous place for large dogs who need to run.

Children are also most welcome; it’s a pretty neat place for them to run around too.

No smoking in the cabin please; we try to set a good example for the stove.

Scenery that is beautiful in all seasons and weather
108 acres to explore on foot
A stocked lake across from our gate for fishing
Several stream valleys to explore on foot
A superb venue for doing nothing at all

The Greenland Gap Nature Conservancy
Nancy Hank’s birthplace
The old railroad town of Keyser

Within an hour’s drive, you will find:
Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls state parks
Dolly Sods Wilderness Area
Seneca Rocks
Jennings Randolph Lake
Canoeing on the South Branch of the Potomac River
Smoke Hole Caverns
Excursion trains in Cumberland, Maryland, and Romney, West Virginia
Lots of beautiful countryside for exploring

BELLE COTE VILLA

Yes, according to Reuters, you can now book 3 days at a “space hotel” for $4,400,000 for 3 nights per person. Or, you can take your whole family to the Caribbean island paradise of Dominica at Belle Cote Villa for just $1,200 per week. Beyond the price, which is the better deal, let’s see:

VIEWS:
Space Hotel – 80 sunrises per day
Belle Cote – Only one a day
I regret to say, I’d give the space hotel this point but at Belle Cote you can sit on the balcony with fresh fruit and coffee, listening to the birds waking up, and see some of the most beautiful sunrises on earth.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
Space Hotel – Pod room.
Belle Cote – 3 full bedrooms, 2 ½ baths, full kitchen, a huge great room, private swimming pool and plenty of “space”.
I feel that Belle Cote wins this point.

FOOD
Space Hotel - Prepackaged frozen food.
Belle Cote - Fresh natural foods grown on the island, caught from the sea or raised locally and a huge kitchen with everything you need to make dining wonderful.
You’ll probably eat in your space suit in your room whereas at Belle Cote you can choose the dining table, the upper balcony, or by the barbeque by the pool. And at Belle Cote you can dine at a local restaurant to further savor the local Caribbean fare. I’m not sure what restaurants they’re offering in space, but you’ll likely find a McDonalds.
Point to Belle Cote.

DRINK:
Space Hotel - I don’t imagine that you’ll find good beer or rum punches.
Belle Cote - when you arrive there’s a few Kubuli’s (a wonderful local beer made by Guinness Brew Masters) to start you off. The fresh fixings for Rum Punch are available everywhere.
Point to Belle Cote (I, personally, would give this 2 points when on vacation)

ACTIVITIES:
Space Hotel - Looking out the window at earth and the stars, nice view at a distance, with no space walks. At the space hotel guests “wear Velcro suits so they can crawl around their pod rooms by sticking themselves to the walls like Spiderman.” I guess that counts as an activity.
Belle Cote - Beaches, waterfalls, rainforests, and amazing hikes to places like the Boiling Lake, great diving and snorkeling. Dominica is known as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean”.
You may be able to play checkers with other guests at Space Hotel. Oh, BTW, we have Checkers too.
Point to Belle Cote.

PREPARATION TIME:
Space Hotel - 8 weeks of training, who gets that much vacation?
Belle Cote - Pack your swim suit and catch a flight, about 1 day.
Point to Belle Cote.
