I just had the greatest massage while being pregnant-and The Massage Center had a special table for me to lay down in-ON MY STOMACH!! I got to lay on my stomach!!!!

I wanted to take that table(and the massage therapist:) home with me.

It took all the pain away in my lower back and hips. Has anyone else experience the success as I did?

I think the Egyptians must be history's first recorded hoarders. For thousands of years, they built whole societies around the idea that you most certainly did take it with you. Right down to the mummified pet cats.

So I consider myself a true Egyptian, in the spiritual sense, right down to my little cat Elle (unmummified). She and I live in my own private pyramid of stuff. She never cares how many little shampoo bottles are stashed in the linen closet (478 give or take) or that the empty box in the hallway has been in the same spot for 7 months. Why that is, I couldn't say. She loves me anyway. Never mind the hundred or so magazines and bills that pile up around and on the bed. She doesn't know I'm dying, sick to death of this self-made tomb.

The Egyptians had thousands of workers getting just a handful of folks ready for a proper sendoff to the afterlife. I should be so proud - I did this all myself! I am a mummy, wrapped in the shroud of my own life. A living graveyard of stuff.

Did I mention that I hate the name of this OCD? Hoarding. Hoarder. There -- I said it out loud.

Tourette's sounds like a swank French bistro. Tricholomania sounds like a serious virus (not your fault, sweetie!), handwashing (pity - she just wants clean hands), germophobia - who isn't afraid of unseen creepies? Plus, it is so *obvious* that no person without a well-documented disorder would pull out their hair, wash endlessly, or manifest any other seemingly bizarre behavior.

But hoarding is the red-headed stepchild of OCDs. Just a few words and images that come to mind: squalor, fire department, eviction, slob, flashing lights, police, axes, ladders, social workers, flashbulbs, lawyers, warrants, latex gloves, news department, nutcase, freakshow. "Woman Suffocates Under Piles of Clutter In Home" (an actual headline) - this is the Mick Jagger of compulsions.

Hoarding sounds like it is a choice. It isn't. It must be that -ing ending -- like sleep-ing or bath-ing or read-ing. No sexy rehab to hit the tabloids either. It's big trucks, the dump, and companies with asinine names like "Clutterbusters" to the rescue. There go the flashbulbs again. So *not* sexy. No pity, just good old-fashioned revulsion. People assume you are lazy, stupid, nasty, cheap, unrefined, unclean, sick, and did I mention freak?

Well, I've had enough. Enough of staying home and meeting no one out of fear that I can't reciprocate their hospitality. Enough of the terror of not answering the doorbell when it rings. Enough of not dating and moving on with 'normal life.' Enough of working too many hours and avoiding what I need to face. Enough of the magazine articles that shout "organize your whole life in only 3 hours!" Enough of the "professional organizer" mentality. Enough of the word "messies." Enough of the shock-and-awe television shows (although, I have to admit, we make GREAT television - there's so much to GAWK at). I'm talking about psychological distress that impairs normal functioning and living.

For years, I've wanted to participate in some kind of group to meet others who suffer with this OCD. I'm done with the wait. Most of the hoarders I know are fabulous, creative people who are sick of suffering in silence.

Maybe we meet somewhere with black cloth on the windows. Maybe we just roll up to the Bob Evans. I'm certainly open to suggestions. But first, we need to find out how many people are interested in getting together.

Book Club

We are a large book club with a small group feel. So don't let our membership number fool you. A lot of our meetings range from around 5-15 people. I try to vary the books (classics, fiction, non-fiction, etc.) and have several discussions scheduled each month to allow for each paticular member's taste in books, schedule, and location. I would like this to be a group where we can meet to discuss books in a lighthearted yet insightful way.

At each meeting we discuss the book(s) listed in title of the event and described in the details of that same event. It is best that you have read or attempted to read most of the book before the meeting. I will post discussion questions for each book (if I can find discussion questions) under the "Files" tab on the site.

I also may add social or volunteer events to the calendar. So please be sure to check out the calendar on a regular basis. You should receive email reminders of each event, as well, so missing an event should not be a problem.

ATTACHMENT PARENTING IS WHAT THEY DID WITHOUT BOOKS! this is exactly my point.

the books appear to be neccessary because industrialization and capitalism has caused modern societies to forget many things. a relationship to ecological processes and attachment parenting are two that come to mind. compare industrialized societies with "primative" cultures and really ask hard questions regarding the quality and value of those differing lifestyles and cultural practices. why is sudden infant death and infant mortality is SUBSTANTIALLY higher in developed countries. why?!?!?

A mamma claiming to practice attachment parenting wrote, "What we do is not better than anyone's personal parenting stlye decisions. We have to respect others and their decisions. My decision to practice AP is right for me but that doesn't mean it is right for you."

i'm a die hard liberal...and liberal, at it's core, as i define it, involves respecting others' decisions. "what may be right for me may not be right for you", etc. or, put another way, "i don't enjoy what you enjoy, or value what you value, but please, enjoy whatever you may enjoy, and do as you see fit."

as with most things in life, there is much gray. driving drunk for instance...take the above mentioned liberal view and the safety of others is threatened. so in that case we cannot, with good conscience, accept a liberal view (again, as defined above) on this specific example.

the same is true with parenting, I BELIEVE. should parents be allowed to whip their kids if they see fit? should parents be allowed to put their children in a closet if they think it's appropriate punishment. is it the best parenting practice to let a 4 month old cry themselves to sleep or sleep in thier own nursery? where is the line between "do what you see fit" and an inferior, if not damaging, development retarding parenting method? obviously my beliefs about child development, the value of the differention process, the value of emotional intelligence and emotional sensitivity, and the role of parenting as the most influential force behind cultural evolution affect my perspective thatattachment parenting IS better than most western, first world approaches. the data and ALL of my experiences with attachment parented children clearly shows this. for example:

co-sleeping is not dangerous nor inappropriate. sudden infant death syndrome has been theorized as a result of 1) the infant needing to model breathing patterns from their caretakers while sleeping. akin to jumping out of a plane without a parachute, infants suffocate to death without the adult co-sleeper to jump start their breathing by the infant hearing and/or feeling the breath of the adult 2) a panic attack resulting from loneliness and isolation. remember, it's a scientific fact that infants who are not held and touched can DIE. a fatal panic attack is not a far stretch from this reality.

responding immediately to an infant EVERY time they request attention does not result in a spoiled, manipulative child. studies have shown, over and over, that allowing a child to differentiate on THIER time schedule results in more independant, less co-dependant adults. exhausting? probably.

is breast milk superior to formula in multitude of ways? yes! if a woman CAN produce breat milk, but chooses to bottle feed formula is this an inferior and less healthy way to parent? i say yes. what is most tragic to me is that parents who claim that parenting styles other than AP are equally as valid simply parent that way out of ignorance, lack of education and awareness of the cultural forces that pressure them to parent any other way.

maybe the initial poster of the "taking the easy way out" comment could have chosen less offensive and provocative language. i apologize to non-attachment parents who were offended even though it wasn't me who made the comment.

Some friends have asked me to help them create a group specifically for people who want to raise money to help people who are struggling financially from being diagnosed with cancer.

They want to do this because a friend of their's son was diagnosed with kidney cancer (at 11 months) and the family has been struggling every since unable to get help paying bills. They thought there were programs for situations like that but unfortunately they were wrong.

I don't care if you have written 785 books and have 1,945 publications under your belt. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO IMPLY THAT WE ARE TAKING THE EASY ROAD OUT OF PARENTING!!!!!!!! Do you realize how rude and uneducated that statement was?? You are entitled to your own (narrow minded) opinion, but it was quite rude to post it. My issue was not the fact that your way is beneath mine or vice versa, it was the wording you chose to include in your post. How dare you tell me to read some book on this issue? I have read PLENTY of books on the topic of parenting. I am far from uneducated and have made the best choice for myself and my child. Wow! It is simply amazing to me that only the words "meet with other parents who don't take the easy way out of parenting" has created such a strong reaction in some craigslist parents. I am fascinated by the tension that this post has created and am sympathetic to both sides of this. I have been witness to several parents who have practiced attachment parenting and am in awe of the results. i realize that parenting, no matter how you do it isn't easy...but before you attack the personal integrity of the poster of the original message read the book, "Our Babies, Our Selves" by Meredith Small. I studied differentiation, attachment, attachment styles and did my thesis on the relationship between these factors and anxiety and overall functioning life. If you are as anti-intellectual as our FORMER president you may consider all of this to be psycho-babble...but then again your opinion wouldn't matter in my book much. I'm sorry if you felt attacked by the attachment parenting represenatives comment, but give attachement parenting a fair listen. it's remarkable stuff!

I agree with the other "dissenter". Your kind are generally so elitist. You think your way is the only right way and that everyone else is doing a wrong or bad job instead of just a different job. I find that your children are generally the ones at the library or other outings that are super hyper, out of control, rude and just have plain bad manners.

I have raised three wonderful children without your psycho babble bull crap and they are doing fine. One in college and two in high school and all doing quite well. Just because I did not choose your path does not mean I took the easy way or that I am a lazy parent. I was a room mom all through elementary and middle school. I volunteer for both of my son's robotics team and bake goodies for my daughter's fav professors. I cook on average 5-6 nights a week (everyone gets a day off every now and then) and volunteer with one of our local hospitals.

I support your right to have a group that specializes in your interests, but to put down all of the hard working parents who don't choose your path seems like it would be beneath someone of your superiority (sarcasm intended). Good luck with your group and I hope that someone in contact with your children is a little less inflated than you and will teach them that it is our differences that make us wonderful.

I found your posting to be QUITE offensive. Your ad states that you are looking for people who don't "take the easy way out of parenting". Meaning that those of us who don't: breastfeed, cosleep or let our children wean on their own are lazy parents looking for an easy road. That is absurd. We are science based parents who listen to our doctors, stay educated on the latest trends in parenting and ultimately choose the road we feel is best for our child(ren). To imply that we are looking for an easy way to raise our children is an uneducated opinion that should not have been part of your ad. I care for my child deeply and take better care of him than most of the parents I know that practice attachment parenting, however I would never start a group that would only recongnize parents with the same beliefs as myself. There are pros and cons to both sides here, but no need to put someone down because they are different than yourselves. I feel sorry for your children for having such egotistic, narrow minded, judgemental parents.
